Feedback from users has highlighted some weaknesses within the NRLS, including how data is captured, the way it’s shared and the ability to provide feedback. One of the largest issues is that the NRLS doesn’t support the ability for patients and carers to report, or support routine reporting from all organisations, sectors and healthcare settings.
These weaknesses within the system mean that the NRLS does not meet the requirements of the Five Year Forward View, which requires transparency of performance data, a more engaged relationship with patients and joined-up health services.
In order to meet the standards of the Five Year Forward View, NHS Improvement have introduced the Development of the Patient Safety Incident Management System (DPSIMS) Project. The project is working with users to identify and design the best single system for collecting data and information around risk and harm within healthcare. The new system will provide greater transparency around patient safety data, increase learning opportunities and make it easier for any healthcare organisation (including non-acute settings and the independent sector) to submit reports, contributing to and engaging with national learning for improvement.
Datix are working closely with NHS Improvement throughout the Beta stage of the project, which will be made available in November 2018. Our involvement in the project will ensure that our customers can continue to seamlessly report data as they always have.
